Process Details

Check your visa expiry date and conditions

Before exploring options, check when your visa expires and if you have a condition preventing further stay. Use VEVO, the myVEVO app, or your visa grant letter. If you have a condition that prevents further stay, you must leave before it expires.

Explore new visa options and apply

If your visa doesn't prevent further stay, you may be able to apply for a new visa while your current one is valid. Check if your current visa offers a pathway, or explore the visa finder to see what else you can apply for.

Remain lawful on a bridging visa

If you apply for a new visa before your current one expires, you are usually granted a Bridging visa A (BVA) to keep you lawful while a decision is made. Do not leave Australia on a BVA if you need to return; apply for a BVB first.

If your visa has expired

Your options are limited if your visa has already expired. You are unlawfully in Australia and expected to leave. You can seek financial or travel assistance from your embassy, the IOM, or the Homeward Return Program.
